Why Leavenworth photographs so well
Leavenworth sits where Icicle Creek meets the Wenatchee River, about two hours from Snohomish County over Stevens Pass on Highway 2. The town is built in a Bavarian style, so you get painted storefronts and flower boxes on one side and granite peaks on the other.
Few places in Washington change this much through the year. Summer is warm and green along the river, fall turns the hills gold and orange, and winter brings snow and the town’s holiday lights in December.
Seasons and timing
Summer
Warm, dry and bright. Plan portraits for the evening, when the canyon walls catch the last light and the river glows.
Fall
Late September through October is peak color. It’s also a busy season in town, so book lodging early and give yourself buffer time on the road.
Winter
Snow portraits are unforgettable, and a little planning makes them easy: warm layers for the walk, boots under the dress and a short, focused portrait window. Stevens Pass can need chains or close in a storm, so I travel in a day early for winter weddings.
